Katavati, Sifnos

The picturesque settlement of Katavati, next to Apollonia, in Sifnos

An authentic village with history and tradition

Katavati is one of the lesser-known settlements of Sifnos, with houses inhabited year-round and a unique, warm atmosphere. Its name likely comes from its position higher than Apollonia, as from here, one "descends" towards the island’s center. It is a village full of surprises – tradition, history, nature, and authentic Cycladic beauty. If you visit Sifnos, don’t miss the chance to explore this place and experience the magic of true island life!

Strolling through Katavati

Leaving your car at the entrance of the village, the real Katavati experience begins. Walking through its cobbled alleyways is a visual delight, with well-preserved houses, flower-filled courtyards, and traditional Cycladic elements all around.

Places of tradition and mystery

  • The central church of the village, Agios Georgios, with its large square surrounded by houses and courtyards. In summer, cultural events take place here, bringing life to the village.
  • Perhaps the most mysterious church in the area, Panagia Angeloktisti! According to tradition, it was built by angels, and even its name suggests something supernatural and unique. Its architecture, with a three-aisled structure and conical dome, makes it stand out.
  • Prophet Elias of Katavati: From here, you can start a unique hiking journey along some of Sifnos’ most famous trails, leading to the Monastery of Fyrogia, Prophet Elias Psilos, Agios Ioannis in Mavro Chorio, and Vathi!

Stunning views and hiking trails

From Katavati, you can admire one of the most beautiful views of the neighboring settlement of Exambela, as well as Apollonia. If you love nature and hiking, the trails starting from here are among the most impressive in Sifnos.

Katavati offers accommodations that operate year-round, making it an ideal choice for those who want to stay in a quiet and authentic environment. Here, you’ll also find a mini-market, a flower shop serving both locals and visitors, and a store showcasing modern pottery art.

Since Apollonia is only a 10-minute walk from here, many choose Katavati for their stay to be close to the nightlife of "The Steno" while still enjoying the island’s tranquility.

The "Historic" Radio Station of Katavati

Something few people know is that in the 1980s, Katavati was home to a local radio station operating inside an old mill! Many of today’s Sifnians in their 50s and 60s took their first steps as radio producers here, creating a piece of living history that remains in the memories of locals.

The Monastery of Fyrogia

Just past the southern exit of the village, on the road to Vathi, you will find the Monastery of Fyrogia (16th century), built in a stunning location. It is one of the most beautiful monasteries on the island and is well worth a visit.
