The landscape of Sifnos – A story of centuries
In prehistoric times, Sifnos was covered in forests and rich wildlife. The first inhabitants, arriving in the Neolithic era, altered the landscape by burning forests to create farmland and pastures. This led to the creation of terraces (pezoules), where they cultivated grains, vineyards, and olive trees.
Once, Sifnos was able to sustain a large population, but today, with the rise of tourism, many terraces remain fallow. However, the landscape of Sifnos retains its uniqueness, with a mix of hills, rocky cliffs, valleys, low vegetation, and cedar trees.
Minerals & mines – A hidden treasure
The subsoil of Sifnos is rich in crystalline marbles, iron, manganese, and other minerals. Since ancient times, its mines—especially in Agios Sostis and Kapsalos—produced gold and silver, making the island an important mining center.
Legend has it that the people of Sifnos sent a golden egg every year to Delphi as tribute to Apollo. However, when they decided to send a gold-plated egg instead of a solid gold one, the god became angry, and the mines disappeared into the depths of the earth...
Sifnos and birds – A paradise for birdwatchers
The island is a stopover for many migratory birds, including herons, bee-eaters, and turtledoves. You can also spot rare birds of prey, such as the Bonelli's eagle, the peregrine falcon, and the Eleonora’s falcon (Falco eleonorae), which nest on the island’s cliffs.
