Kato Petali, Sifnos

The settlement of Kato Petali in Sifnos

A picturesque stop between Apollonia and tradition

Kato Petali is one of those villages that captivate you at first sight. Built on a small hill east of Apollonia, it proudly overlooks the island, inviting you to explore its charm. It may not have the fame of Sifnos' larger villages, but it will reward you with its authenticity.

The square and the church of Zoodochos Pigi

The heart of the village beats in its beautiful, paved square, where the church of Zoodochos Pigi stands out with its impressive, tower-like bell towers. During the summer months, cultural events are held here by the Cultural Association of Sifnos and other organizations—music nights, theatrical performances, and traditional games that revive the authentic Sifnian spirit.

Trails and beautiful walks

If you love walking, then the trail connecting Apollonia with Kato Petali is an experience you shouldn’t miss! It’s an easy, short, and scenic route through nature that leads to the village square. Along the way, you will come across an old dovecote with a tall palm tree, while the view toward Apollonia, Pano Petali, and, in the distance, Prophet Elias Psilos, is truly stunning.

If you’re in the mood for more exploration, you can continue from Kato Petali toward the Monastery of Vrysi and Exambela—especially in spring, when nature is at its most colorful. Along the way, you’ll pass by the church of Panagia tou Koukkia (or Myrtidiotissa), dating back to 1614—a quiet, picturesque spot for a short rest during your walk.

Historical monuments and monasteries

East of the village, you will find the historic monastery of Agios Ioannis Chrysostomos, which, according to tradition, housed the first Greek school in Sifnos.

Accommodation & local flavors

Although small, Kato Petali is an ideal destination for those who want to experience authentic Sifnos. Here, you’ll find rental rooms and apartments for a comfortable stay in a peaceful environment, as well as traditional taverns serving homemade Sifnian dishes—perfect for enjoying a meal in a relaxed, welcoming atmosphere.
